Position Overview:
The Director of Nursing and Clinical Operations (“Director”) is responsible for both the strategic direction and day-to-day activities for both the profession of nursing at MIT Health and overall clinical operations. The Director leads clinical operational initiatives across the organization to ensure that MIT Health delivers excellence in patient access, safety and quality, operational efficiency, and patient and staff experience
As the most senior nursing leader in the organization, the Director will provide strategic and operational leadership for the Professional Practice of Nursing. The Director is responsible for maintaining clinical and patient-care standards for all nurses within the organization, as well as patient-facing clinical support staff (e.g., medical assistants etc.). Responsibilities include oversight of the hiring and supervision for various clinical areas of MIT Health, as well as oversight of MIT Health’s Clinical Pharmacists. As an APRN, the Director may also maintain part-time clinical care activities to account for no more than 10% effort.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Directs the overall operations of all clinical areas of MIT Health to assure optimal delivery of safe, appropriate, accessible care and service.
- Supports/facilitates coordination of workflow across medical, nursing, technical, ancillary and office staff.
- Collaborates and ensures effective communication with other leaders to align operations and implement/monitor interdisciplinary change initiatives, workflow, quality and process improvements.
- Accountable for ensuring adequate clinical support staffing levels are in place to meet patient and provider needs.
- Ensures clinical service areas are regularly and effectively assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care/service.
- Establishes standard practices, policies, and operating procedures to ensure a timely, efficient, and positive patient experience.
- Ensures that the necessary policies, training and education are in place to support consistency of performance in all clinical areas. Oversees initial and annual competency evaluation of all nursing and clinical support staff (e.g., medical assistants etc.)
- Accesses data and reporting for all clinical operations and provides analysis and recommendations for operational and quality/safety improvements
- Designs, implements, oversees and evaluates MIT Health’s nursing professional practice model. Implements and oversees a reliable audit system that assesses nursing practice compliance with current standards of nursing practice, patient care and regulatory compliance.
- Oversees operational, HR and compliance aspects for Clinical Pharmacists.
- Partners with departmental clinical quality and safety leadership to identify opportunities to leverage individual and departmental expertise to improve quality, safety, and patient experience and access across the continuum of care.
- Regularly reviews and analyzes patient access and satisfaction data. Regularly reviews and analyzes clinical quality, utilization, and financial data (revenue/costs) as it pertains to the various service areas. Directs and oversees the development and implementation of improvement plans.

Minimum Required Education and Experience:
- Master’s degree in business, healthcare operations, or healthcare related field preferred.
- Board-Certified Nurse Practitioner (Primary Care field preferred), licensed in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
- BLS certification required.
- 5 years of successful leadership in an ambulatory practice with progressive scope of responsibility, including demonstrated success in managing financial and personnel resources, improving patient and staff experience, and working effectively with medical staff.
- Skilled user of business-related software including Excel, Smartsheets, Visio, Tableau, PowerPoint etc.; expert user of EHR and related clinical record-keeping systems.
- Ability to interface with all levels of executives within MIT and MIT Health. Excellent communication skills and ability to have sensitive discussions and share information of a confidential nature.
- Deep knowledge of regulatory requirements, quality and performance improvement, managed care, health care delivery systems and nursing practice.
